The RMI's combined index of current and future market indicators fell by just over seven points to 40.7 for the second quarter. NAHB Remodelers Chairman Donna Shirey noted that "Remodelers are suffering from weak consumer confidence and constricted credit lines, and that many homeowners are delaying remodeling projects because of economic uncertainty." The current conditions indexes for the remodeling market worsened in the Northeast and South, but improved somewhat in the Midwest and West in the latest reading. All of the component indexes (major additions, minor additions, maintenance and repairs) were down, with the latter component showing the least decline. In addition, all of the indexes gauging future remodeling business volume declined, including those measuring calls for bids, work committed for the next three months, backlogs of remodeling jobs, and appointments for proposals. In the special questions section of the RMI survey, remodelers also reported on the changing composition of remodeling projects — for example, 61% said bathroom remodeling was one of their most common projects during the first half of 2010, while 52% named kitchen remodeling as their most popular project. In previous years, kitchen remodeling was reported as the most common activity by more than 70% of remodeler respondents. Read more in our press release or view the RMI tables online.
