Mid January Update
DOT Issues New Hours of Service Rules for Drivers

The principal changes are the establishment of a 34-hour restart rule for a driver's "work week" and requiring a 30-minute break after eight hours of driving in a given "workday." The FMCSA did not opt to change the amount of driving time from 11 hours and it also opted not to change the length of the driver's workday.
The effective date for most of the changes is July 1, 2013. The definition of "on duty" is effective 60 days from publication in the Federal Register (February 27, 2012).
While the HOS rule is often associated with long-haul drivers in the media, aspects apply to short-haul drivers and smaller trucks as well. It can be somewhat confusing due to some special provisions based on the size of the truck and distance traveled.
NLBMDA has prepared an issue briefing, which can be downloaded here. Information on the final rule is available on FMCSA's Web site.

Swanson's UNWritten Rules of Management, #23

When making decisions, the "pros" are much easier to deal with than the "cons." Your boss wants to see both. This is another aspect of making sure that you see what's missing. There is nothing more valuable than a review process that surfaces all the potential consequences of an action rather than just the best-case scenario. There is no way to effectively weigh the risks and benefits of an action if one is ignorant of the risks. By presenting both the pros and cons, you show others that you have thought the problem through. You will have more credibility.
